HCCLA is accepting donations for the Constitutional Rights Center of Texas.
The Center is a small, newly formed non-profit run by William Demond, a civil rights lawyer here in Houston and formerly in Austin. It is dedicated to training young lawyers and law students [via an externship with Thurgood Marshall School of Law] in Prisoner Litigation Reform Act work and Sec. 1983 actions. There is nothing like this in Texas, and such a center could be an agent for change here. Imagine what creative law students backed by experienced civil rights attorneys at a University could do in the less profitable but so necessary field of jail overcrowding, mistreatment of inmates, mental health needs, etc.
This is a worthy cause that will benefit our clients and their families in the future. Also, the Center will help train those students interested in this area of law.
